Campaign Lead

JOB DESCRIPTION

Main Job Purpose
Lead Regional Priority Campaigns as identified in Regional Work Program
Support Regional Affiliates in their organizing campaigns
Support and co-ordinate regionally, the global priority campaigns including global section and department campaigns

Main Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and lead the implementation of regional priority campaigns
  • Supporting global priority campaigns as they apply in the region through co-ordinating with the Global Campaign Director and team
  • Supporting global section and department priority campaigns as they apply in the region in co-ordination with the global section or department head and team
  • Develop productive working relationships with affiliate partners and participating regions including affiliate campaign governance in the region
  • Identify and communicate research, communications, legal, and training needs of the field campaigns
  • Assist affiliates in identifying resources, training member organisers, mapping and targeting, identifying and recruiting leaders to build effective and representative organising committees, planning workplace action to win membership, union recognition, and strong CBAs
  • Carry out weekly debriefs with field organisers and affiliate campaigners and debrief regularly with the Regional Secretary
  • Develop effective strategies to reduce/neutralise employer campaigns including inoculation, minimising retaliation and mobilising workers to take shop floor action, in addition to mobilising global solidarity
  • Facilitate cross-border delegations and exchanges to promote solidarity and achieve campaign goals
  • Assist in collection of evidence, workers stories and other legal and communications material
  • Provide Priority Project Leader or affiliate leaders and participating regions with regular, reliable debrief data and campaign project reports
  • Develop and meet global campaign benchmarks and timeline
  • Carry out work within agreed on budget constraints
  • Abide risk management mechanisms
Decisions
  • Each campaign will have unique challenges based on capacity and expertise, leverage strategies, political difficulties, employer tactics, shop floor strength and personnel.  Decisions will need to be made, in consultation with stakeholders, re appropriate strategies and tactics relevant to the campaign. These might include when to take a campaign public, how to combat employer retaliation, how to effectively engage civil society organisations and regulatory bodies. Guidance will come from the Global Campaign Director and team, global section and department heads and team as well as Priority Project Leader or experienced affiliate and regional leaders and the campaign team.
Complexity
  • Will need significant strategic and tactical planning skills
  • Will need to monitor and assess the progress of  number of field campaigns, coordinate actions and exchanges, bring management violations to the attention of the campaign leadership, ensure ongoing communications and campaign specific training relevant to specific campaign stages.
  • Will need to take initiative and work independently as well as exercise good judgment about when and from whom advice and approval is required
Contacts 
  • Lead in the implementation of organising best practices which will mean significant changes for some affiliates and require tact and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Lead workers and affiliates into action in the face of employer resistance which can involve convincing people to take significant risks, involving the ability to inspire and encourage workers and affiliates through oral and written communications.
  • Write clear, concise campaign reports that give accurate, reliable assessment of campaign progress and outcomes in difficult circumstances.

Other important requirements of the job not covered above 
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word to create and maintain relevant data collection and reporting
  • Excellent fluent spoken and written English language is required and knowledge of one or more additional languages is an advantage.
