Trainer - Safeguarding in the field training
Safeguarding
Everyone at HelpAge International has a role in creating and sustaining a safe and respectful working environment, where no one comes to any harm or is maltreated. At HelpAge we take our responsibilities very seriously and will take action against wrongdoing. We will do everything we can to ensure that we do not engage people that pose a safeguarding risk and will undertake criminal record checks as required.
At HelpAge we use the following working definition of safeguarding:
Safeguarding is the responsibility of HelpAge to make sure our staff, operations, and programmes do no harm to anyone who comes into contact with the charity. This includes preventing inappropriate behaviours such as staff bullying and harassment.
Safeguarding Committees have been formed in every country and region where we work, and they are responsible for embedding safeguarding in their local operation.
Scope of work
As part of our commitment to embed safeguarding in our working culture, we have identified the need for our internal staff in all our offices and the partners who delivery our programmes to receive specialist safeguarding training for the field.
All staff will have undertaken the Safeguarding Essentials training course by the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, either online or facilitated face to face internally.
Training design and delivery
· To design a one-day safeguarding training for staff and partners working in the field with communities and beneficiaries to meet the following aims and objectives:**
Aim
Learners know how to recognize safeguarding concerns in the field context arising from all forms of harm and abuse including sexual exploitation and internal allegations of bullying and harassment, know how to raise and respond to complaints
Objectives
o Learners increase their understanding of harm and abuse and what amounts to a breach of our Code of Conduct**
o Learners will develop skills in:**
§ Receiving complaints**
§ Supporting survivors, including signposting**
§ Proactively preventing harm and abuse in the field**
§ Raising awareness of the complaint response mechanism**
§ Encouraging community members and beneficiaries to report concerns.**
· To schedule calls with the Regional Safeguarding Committee and HR Project Manager in advance of the training design to consult on the local context and internal safeguarding policies
· To produce and share the training plan with the Regional Safeguarding Committee and HR Project Manager, building in time for feedback and amendment before delivery. The plan should include details of timings, objective, content, activities, social groupings and resources/equipment to support the session.
· To ensure that the training:**
o balances information to increase understanding and practical skills development;**
o is contexualised for the region where the learners are working, taking account of local safeguarding risks.
o includes relevant case studies and simulation exercises relevant to the field.
o meets the needs of learners with different learning styles , allows for a mix of social groupings including individual, pair work, small groups and plenary session to encourage active participation and learning
· To share the training material including all presentations and handouts with the Regional Safeguarding Committee and HR Project Manager.
· To deliver the training before the end of March 2020.
Please note that we will video the training.
Supporting information
We have offices in XX [insert number] countries in the XX region, and the training will be delivered to the management cohort across the whole region.
The Regional Safeguarding Committee and HR Project Manager will determine the most suitable host location(s) for the training.

Essential criteria
· Experience and expertise in the design and delivery of bespoke safeguarding training in the field to meet organisational requirements, taking account of internal policies and ways of working.
· Experience of encouraging reporting and receiving reports of safeguarding concerns in the local/regional context where the training will be delivered and the challenges that can arise.**
· Experience of and ability to train in psychological first aid in supporting survivors of harm and abuse.**
· An understanding of the specific safeguarding risks in the local context.**
· Experience of developing and implementing complaint response mechanisms in consultation with the community.**
· Ability and interest in collaborating with the Regional Safeguarding Committee and HR Project Manager to ensure that the training is designed and delivered to the internal specification to meet the aims and objectives for learners.**
· Experience, understanding of, and ability to work successfully in the local culture, with awareness of sensitivities when working in complex operating environments where people are at significant risk of harm and abuse**
· Able to engage and encourage staff at all levels in training activities and respond to their questions and concerns.**
· A commitment to working to our values, equal opportunities, safeguarding, respect and dignity, health and safety and data protection.**
· Based in the region where the training will be delivered, with the legal right to work locally.
· Security training completed in the past three years.
· Local language requirements: English
· Available to design and deliver the training by end of March 2020.
